Felco Secateurs (Number 2)

Good tools that last are what we use in the nursery, and when it comes to secateurs, our only choice is the Felco No 2. The sharp steel blades offer a clean and precise cut when pruning roses or other similar sized woody shrubs, one side containing a sap groove which prevents the blades from sticking together - a trademark of cheaper secateurs.

Felco list these as best for medium and large hands, however small hands, on our nursery are also able to use these with ease. Whilst they are probably most used for pruning roses, and other similar woody shrubs, there's nothing to stop you from also using these throughout the garden for deadheading throughout the year.

With a cushion shock absorber, wrists and hands are protected from sudden jolts with the soft open and close. The handles are coated in a non-slip coating which makes them easy to hold, with and without gloves and their bright red colour makes them easy to find in a shed or when dropped in more overgrown areas.

Don't let the investment put you off - these Swiss-made tools are ones that will last you many years in a normal garden environment. In addition, all parts are replaceable, and Felco also offers a maintenance service.

These would also make a thoughtful gift to experienced gardeners who are maybe out of space for another rose, saving them time when it comes to pruning season.
